“Vote Count From Kenya’s Election Was Rigged,” Said U.S. Envoy for Africa
January 7, 2008
Chief U.S. envoy for Africa Ms. Jendayi Frazer on Monday acknowledged vote rigging in Kenya’s election, saying Kenyans have been cheated by their political leadership and their institutions.
Ms. Frazer made the statement during a press conference in Nairobi, where she has already spent three days negotiating with Mr. Kibaki and Mr. Odinga.
The electoral commission was flawed and needed reform, she said after the outfit’s chairman admitted that he was not sure if outgoing president Mwai Kibaki won the vote.
Today, Monday, was the U.S. envoy for Africa’s last day of a three-day mission during which she won an offer from Kibaki to form a coalition government and a concession from Odinga that he would negotiate without insisting that Kibaki first resign.
The United States, Britain and the European Union have urged Kibaki and Odinga to negotiate.
