19 New Officers to Swell the Customs Ranks At Cairns International Airport
September 6, 2008
From Monday 8 September, 19 new officers will join the Customs ranks at Cairns International Airport. The new officers officially graduated from the Customs Trainee Program in a ceremony held Friday in Cairns.
Customs National Manager Airport Operations North, Gayle Brown, welcomed the group to the airport where they will begin their career processing international passengers entering and leaving Australia.
“Cairns is the only regional center that conducts this type of entry level training for new Customs officers. It’s a highly successful recruitment and training program for Customs,” Ms Brown said.
“With Cairns employing the largest number of Customs officers outside of a capital city, the trainee program plays an important part in recruiting and retaining qualified officers in the region.
“Counting this year’s graduating group, the Cairns team has now successfully trained more than 60 officers in just three years,” Ms Brown said.
The training program covered issues such as Customs legislation and powers, passenger assessment and baggage examination, security, counter terrorism, cargo and trade. After graduating, the officers can look forward to a challenging and varied career with Customs.
