June 11, 2008
Police in Margibi County have arrested two people in connection with the shooting to death of more than ten people on a rubber farm in the county. Reports put the number of people killed in the shooting by unknown gunmen on the bank of the Farmington River at more than ten.
The reports say of the 36 persons dispatched by Commerce Ministry official Charles Bennie to work on his rubber farm, only one person escaped, while ten have been confirmed dead. The other 25 persons are said to be missing in action.
Family members of the contractors told reporters Monday that they have not seen their relatives since the incident was reported.
The shooting is said to be over land that is being contested by Mr. Bennie and Margibi Senator Roland kaine.
Police have confirmed the shooting and have dispatched a team of investigators on the scene to establish facts surrounding the killings.
The men, all residents of the Monrovia suburb of West Point, were reportedly attacked by locals believed to be protecting the land on behalf of Senator Kaine.
But Senator Kaine has denied any knowledge of the killings. He explained that a land dispute has persisted in the area for more than three years now between the locals and Mr. Bennie.
