Britain Hails New Developments on Zimbabwe Presidential Results

Britain on Thursday described the latest developments in Zimbabwe as a head-way to breaking through weeks of political impasse following the March 2008 presidential elections. “For once, evidence has emerged that Mugabe has lost his grip on power”, said UK officials, following Zimbabwe official pronouncement Wednesday evening which showed that Zimbabwe’s opposition presidential candidate beat Robert Mugabe in the presidential election. Ancient “Nutcracker Man” Challenges Ideas on Evolution of Human Diet

Credit: Nicolle Rager Fuller, National Science Foundation Tiny marks on the teeth of an ancient human ancestor known as the “Nutcracker Man” may upset current evolutionary understanding of early hominid diet. Using high-powered microscopes, researchers looked at rough geometric shapes on the teeth of several Nutcracker Man specimens and determined that their structure alone was not enough to predict diet. US Agency Calls for Controls on Tainted Imports

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says the number of recalls of Chinese-made toys containing dangerous lead paint is on the decline as a result of an agreement with China last year. But the acting chairman of the agency is asking Congress to boost efforts to certify the safety of products made overseas before they are shipped to the United States. Raid on Polygamous Sect in Texas Raises Rights Issues

Social workers and law enforcement officers in Texas are investigating the polygamist sect whose ranch compound near the small town of El Dorado was raided by authorities April 4. State officials removed nearly 500 children from the Yearning for Zion ranch and sent them to facilities all around the state. Authorities say they are convinced children were being abused physically and sexually at the ranch, but civil libertarians say this could be a case of religious intolerance.
