NAFO Must Take Action to Protect Vulnerable Marine Species And Habitats Says WWF

WWF-Canada is calling for the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO), and its 13 contracting parties to adopt a plan to protect vulnerable marine species and habitats, including coldwater coral forests, by December 2008, at its Intersessional Meeting next week in Montreal. Protecting corals and other species would bring the severely depleted Grand Banks one step closer to recovery. Read more

After a successful first meeting between Presidents Igor Smirnov (Pridnestrovie) and Vladimir Voronin (Moldova), regular encounters have now begun between cabinet members of the two sides and members of a number of ministerial working groups. The PMR Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed that Moldova and Pridnestrovie now plan on boosting the activity of the joint working groups to resolve a number of issues that have accumulated over recent years in the relations between the two. Last Chance for Animals Investigation Forces Surrender of Puppy Mill Dogs

Last Chance for Animals (LCA) witnessed over 60 World Kennels puppies being released to county shelters over the last couple of days. The LCA investigation into Southern California puppy mills reported by KCAL/KCBS reporter David Goldstein, resulted in a re-inspection of World Kennels by the county animal control. 402 dogs were found — three hundred over the limit — living outside in kennels and inside wire mesh. Condi Advances her Chutzpah Count
Condoleeza Rice may continue to lag behind her boss, George W. Bush, when it comes to the number of Chutzpah of the Week awards; but she is still steadily advancing her count. Actually, this week turned into a tough call between the two of them. Bush was there with his $770 million food aid package, which might finally have thrown the guy into a humanitarian light had he not tacked the allocation on to his $70 billion Iraq war budget (the operative phrase being “tacked on,” as opposed to reallocating some of that Iraq budget to wage peace rather than war). However, having just read the Al Jazeera English account of Condi’s moves in preparing for today’s Middle East peace talks, I decided that, this week at least, hers is the greater arrogance of power.
