Russian Firm Gazprom Neft Sees Half-yearly Net Profit Soar 93.7% to $3.6b

Gazprom Neft, the oil arm of Russian energy giant Gazprom, has posted a 93.7% year-on-year increase in net profit calculated to US GAAP in the first half of 2008 to $3.6 billion. The oil producer’s sales in January-June 2008 stood at $17.7 billion, up 91.2% against the same period of last year. Read more

At Least 140 Die in Stampede At Hindu Temple Near Jodhpur, India

Over 140 people died in a massive stampede at the Chamunda Devi temple Jodhpur, in the western state of Rajasthan, India. A temple wall collapsed, causing panic among ten of thousands of gathered Hindu worshipers who then began to run for safety, causing the stampede. Several are still believed to be trapped under the rubble. Read more
