April 15, 2008
A fire that gutted a dormitory at a girls school near the Uganda capital of Kampala killed 21 people on Monday night, police said.
Police said the dormitory in Buddo Junior School, 12 kilometers west of Kampala, caught fire at 10 p.m. but by the time the fire brigade reached the school the bigger part of the dormitory had been burnt down.
Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said they have confirmed that 19 pupils and two adults of the elite school died. The girls were aged between 7 and 10 years.
She said police are investigating the cause of the fire.
Unverified reports said the matron of the school had locked the dormitory making it difficult for the girls to escape.
