25 Killed in Motor Accident in Liberia
April 4, 2008
Reports reaching Monrovia say twenty-five persons lost their lives on the outskirts of Fatu’s Village in Salayea district in northern Lofa County about 200 kilometers from Monrovia Wednesday, when a 12-tyre DAF truck with Guinean license plate RC-1498-E, overturned in a valley.
According to hospital sources in Salayea, the dead included 11 men, nine women and five children.
The Superintendent of Lofa County, Mr. Galakpai Kortimai told APA Thursday that the truck, overloaded with several sixty gallon drums of fuel, cement and zinc, was heading for Foya from Monrovia, when it lost control after descending a hill with high speed.
“The driver was trying to dodge a hole in the middle of the road when he lost control,” Kortimai said.
This is the second fatal accident in area. In 1983, another accident in the area claimed 37 lives, said a local in the area.
Roads in all parts of Liberia are virtually unmotorable due to years of neglect occasion by the protracted civil conflict.
