27 Confirmed Dead in Saturday’s Zambian Road Accident
June 15, 2008
Twenty seven people were confirmed dead when their bus overturned on the Great East Road, 300 kilometers east of the Zambian capital, Lusaka.
A spokesman for Zambia Police Bonny Kapeso who confirmed the deaths during the accident on Saturday, said the Lusaka-bound bus overturned near the small town of Nyimba and plunged into a ditch.
He said 52 other passengers were injured, some seriously and were rushed to Nyimba district hospital.
The hospital does not however have adequate mortuary facilities to store the dead bodies and could only take in six.
The rest of the dead were stored at hospitals in the nearby town of Katete, awaiting identification.
It is not clear whether the driver of the bus was among the dead or injured as police were still trying to identify the dead and injured.
The spokesman said initial investigations showed that the bus which had a seating capacity of 60 was carrying about 80 passengers.
