A 30-year-old man will face Cairns Magistrates Court today following a detection of child pornography at Cairns International Airport. Customs officers stopped the Chinese man when he arrived on a flight from Hong Kong on Sunday (17 August).
During a baggage search officers located a laptop allegedly containing images featuring males under the age of 18 engaged in sexual activity.
Customs officers arrested the man and he was taken to the Cairns watch house. He was released on bail to appear in Court this morning.
Customs investigators seized the laptop for further examination.
The man will face court today charged with importing Tier 2 goods in contravention of sub-section 233BAB(5) of the Customs Act 1901.
Acting Customs National Manager Investigations Kaylene Zakharoff said visitors to Australia needed to make themselves aware that strict import controls existed for certain types of pornography.
“Customs has a rigorous process of inspection and travelers need to be aware that material depicting child pornography will be seized and that Customs will investigate and prosecute where appropriate,” Ms Zakharoff said.
The maximum penalty for this offense is $275,000 and/or 10 years imprisonment.
