$3,000 Fine Takes Shine Out of Diamonds for Queensland Man

September 22, 2008

A 32-year-old Queensland man has been found guilty and fined $3,000 for intentionally making a false and misleading statement to Customs about the number and value of gemstones he was importing into Australia.

Mr Bryan Keevers of Parkwood appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court last week and pleaded guilty to the charge of intentionally making a false or misleading statement to Customs under section 234 of the Customs Act 1901.

The case began in May last year when Mr Keevers arrived at Brisbane International Airport on a flight from Singapore.

He was stopped and during questioning by Customs officers, Mr Keevers alleged he was carrying one diamond worth approximately USD$7,500.

After examining his baggage, officers found he was carrying a box containing nine cut and polished diamonds worth more than A$40,000.

Customs uncovered a further 13 gems including one green gem, one pink diamond and 11 small red gems.

Customs National Manager Investigations, Richard Janeczko, said yesterday’s court conviction and fine was an excellent result.

“Customs rely on passengers to make honest declarations when importing goods into Australia.

“Making a false or misleading statement to Customs is a serious offense and the matter will be investigated and prosecuted,” Mr Janeczko said.

Mr Keevers was ordered to pay court costs of $468.60.
