4 American Community Colleges Soon for Sierra Leone

March 5, 2008

Three professors from the United States of America are currently in Sierra Leone to relaunch the establishment of American community colleges in the country.

The fact finding mission was begun in 2006 by delegates from the George Mason University in the USA.

In a meeting with Sierra Leone’s Minister of Education in Freetown, at the weekend, one of the professors Dr.Gail Kettlewell, said the objective of the visit was to collaborate with the government of Sierra Leone to develop colleges and their leadership or faculty in the country.

Kettlewell further explained that the aim was to provide consultation over a long period of time to assist with development and sustainability in the beneficiary districts where the colleges will be set up.

She said their dream was to establish community colleges on the African continent but the one in Sierra Leone would be a role model for all, noting that the college would offer associate degrees in several disciplines.

For his part the education minister, Dr Minkailu Bah, acknowledged receipt of the program for the setting up of the colleges and this will be handled by the Tertiary Education Commission.
