50 Illegal Immigrants Reported Missing After Boat Capsizes Off Moroccan Coast
October 10, 2008
The Moroccan authorities announced Thursday that a boat capsized off Kenitra (north of Rabat) with fifty Sub-Saharan immigrants attempting to reach the Spanish coast illegally.
According to early investigation reported by the official Moroccan media, the search operations were continuing by air to locate any survivors.
Some fifty illegal immigrants were reportedly on the wrecked boat that had set sail Tuesday, a survivor found Wednesday said.
Once confirmed, the drama would be the most macabre of its kind in Morocco since the beginning of the year.
The proximity of the Spanish territory with the Moroccan Kingdom is a target for thousands of illegal immigrants, many of whom lost their lives “in search of El Dorado,” it is said.
In 2007, the Moroccan authorities thwarted more than 10,000 illegal migration attempts to the Spanish coast, 3000 of whom were heading to the Canary Islands (south of Morocco).
These operations also led to the dismantling of some 260 migrants trafficking networks.
