61 Year Old Woman Cut Off By the Tide on Rocks At Wembury, U.K.

November 26, 2007

A 61 year old woman was airlifted to Derriford Hospital this afternoon after she sustained back injuries, after becoming cut off by the tide on rocks at Wembury. Brixham Coastguard received a call from the Marine Center at Wembury at 2.40 pm this afternoon reporting that the lady was in difficulty on the rocks at Wembury. Brixham Coastguard requested the Plymouth all weather and inshore RNLI lifeboats to launch.

The all weather boat subsequently launched its y-boat in order to get as close in to the rocks as possible and take out a paramedic. The Police were also informed and Police officers, who were first on scene, were able to wade out to the woman and reassure and stabilize her.

Once paramedics arrived on scene, they were able to make a full assessment and found that although the woman had sustained back injuries, they were not spinal. However, it was still felt prudent to airlift her, rather than take her off the rocks by lifeboat, so the military helicopter winched her and the paramedic on board and took them to Derriford Hospital.

Sean Brooks, Brixham Coastguard Watch Manager says:
I would like to remind members of the public to be careful to check tidal conditions before setting out. Our main concern with this incident was the incoming spring tides. The weather was fine, but people should be careful to check weather, particularly at this time of year, when conditions can change so quickly. When climbing on rocks, please do be careful, they can be very slippery when wet and lead to quite horrendous injuries.
