Kenya’s national illiteracy level is 32 percent, translating into 7 million Kenyans out of a population of an estimated 37 million not being able to read or write, the director of adult education, Joyce Kibathi said this week.

In an exclusive interview with APA in Nairobi on the occasion of the anniversary of the International Literacy Day, Kibathi said that among the current challenges facing adult education in Kenya was the shortage of teachers and reading materials.

She said that a big number of the illiterate are mainly adults who shun going to school mainly due to a shortage of teachers, adding that currently thousands of young people in Kenya are taking advantage of the free primary and secondary school education provided by the government.

“Currently, one big location is served by one teacher, instead of five teachers”, she said, adding that the government plans to employ more teachers.

Kibathi however added that since independence, the government has strived to eradicate illiteracy out of the country.
