Italian national media reported on Monday that an eight-year-old Italian boy has become the youngest person on record to swim across the Strait of Messina between southern Italy’s Calabria and Sicily.
It took Rosolino Cannio 58 minutes to cross the narrowest part of the strait, measuring some 3.1 km (1.9 miles). He was accompanied by a boat with a guide who helped him to avoid dangerous currents.
Cannio said he now plans to cross the Strait of Gibraltar, which separates Europe and Africa, and measures over 14 km (8.7 miles) at its narrowest point.
A few days ago Ilenia Andaloro, an 11-year old Italian, claimed the children’s speed record for crossing the strait, swimming from Calabria to Sicily in 40 minutes.
