About 800 kilograms of cannabis were seized Tuesday night at the port of Nador, north-east of Morocco, aboard a refrigerated truck carrying tomatoes led by a Spaniard.
The drugs were concealed under the truck registered in Spain coming from the coastal city of Agadir, south west of the country, the Moroccan authorities said. The use of vegetable trucks has become common in recent weeks to “deceive the vigilance of the authorities,” according to observers.
Since early 2009, some forty tons of cannabis have been seized in different areas of the country, particularly in the north and northeast parts, against more than 110 tons seized in 2008 involving nearly 600 Moroccan and foreigners.
The arrest of drug traffickers have increased since the beginning of the year, especially after the January 11 dismantling of a network involving so far 112 traffickers, including 77 members of the security forces.
Morocco is “determined” to fight against the cultivation of cannabis to take it to be less than 50,000 hectares in 2009 against 134,000 in 2003, with the aim of eradicating it by 2018.
