9 Ghanaians to Face Up to 10 Years in Jail in Liberia for Drug Trafficking

October 24, 2008

A magistrate court in the Liberian capital Monrovia has found nine Ghanaians guilty of drug trafficking. Jurors at Criminal Court ’B’ unanimously brought down the guilty verdict following months of legal tussles.

French Naval troops last January arrested the nine Ghanaians on board the Blue Atlantic with 92 barrels of cocaine worth an estimated $500,000  in Liberian territorial waters.

The prosecution said it established during the trial that the Blue Atlantic had been engaged in drug trafficking on the West African coast and beyond.

The nine Ghanaians denied involvement in trafficking, and argued that they were on a different mission when they were arrested, but failed to state their mission during their testimonies.

With this guilty verdict, the nine Ghanaians are liable to ten years in prison in Liberian jails.

The trial of the nine Ghanaians was the biggest drug trial ever in the history of the Liberian judicial system.
