9 Killed in Shooting Incident in Liberia

June 10, 2008

Reports reaching the Liberian capital Monrovia say nine persons were shot dead Monday, as they worked on a farm on the bank of the Farmongton River located between Grand Bassa and Margibi Counties about 55 kilometers east of the capital, Monrovia.

The Director of Foreign Trade at the Commerce Ministry, Charles Bennie on whose farm the victims were working when they were shot dead, has blamed Margibi County Senator Roland Kanie for masterminding the killings.

Mr. Bennie, a former spokesman of the defunct rebel LURD Movement, told reporters in Monrovia Monday evening that the assailants were armed with AK-47 rifles and single barrel shotguns.

Senator Kaine who is said to be claiming ownership of the parcel of land on which the victims were working, has since denied involvement in the shooting.

He said he was willing to submit to any investigation into the shootings, and would accept any punishment meted out, if found guilty of involvement.

About three weeks ago, two persons were hacked to death during a land dispute between Rock Town and Wechtoken in Maryland County about 400 kilometers southeast of Monrovia.
