A Young Egyptian Man Dies of Bird Flu
April 5, 2008
A 19 year old Egyptian man, Muhammad Idris Hassan Ibrahim from Beheira Governorate, about 160 kilometers north of Cairo died Saturday from Bird Flu, medical sources said.
The case was among 48 cases of bird flu registered in Egypt since the outbreak of the disease in February 2006.
Dr. Nasr Alsaeid, assistant minister of Health responsible for Preventive and Primary Health Care and Family Planning pointed out that the young man was admitted to a hospital in Alexandria, about 200 kilometers north of Cairo on Thursday suffering from a high temperature and pneumonia.
He said the victim was infected after being exposed to dead birds infected with avian flu.
For the past two years, the government has been taking measures to curb the disease and trying to change the deep-rooted poultry-rearing behaviors that have turned the country of 76 million people into a bird flu hot spot.
