Actually Some Good News For Britney Spears
October 24, 2007
Let’s drop all the jokes for, like, two minutes, and talk about the music behind the staple of celebrity news magazines, known as Britney Spears. We’re all painfully aware of what has been happening in her personal life and somehow, this has overshadowed what made care so much in the first place.
Britney Spears is not a pop star, she is the pop star. (Some might argue that Madonna gets this title, but frankly, you’re wrong.) Britney’s bubblegum Baby One More Time is the epitome of Generation Y pop culture; empty lyrics, a gorgeous package and thudding beats that made every 11-year old girl in America dance like a hooker. We all started giving a crap about Britney with songs like Baby One More Time, Oops…I Did it Again and Toxic but began focusing on her manic behavior when her records stopped coming out. (And maybe this was all her brilliant ploy to keep us paying attention until her next album.) According to what the reviews have said so far, however, it might be time to start paying attention to her music again.
The New York Daily News had this to say about the upcoming Blackout: “She may no longer dance with flair, lip-sync on cue, keep her dress down, or even be judged a suitable mom, but Britney Spears can still turn up on some slammin’ new songs. The much-whispered-about, oft-giggled-over Blackout album, the singer’s first in four years, contains flashes of the zippy pop and propulsive dance beats Brit fans treasure, despite the singer’s, shall we say, distracting activities of the last year.”
Nobody ever asked that pop stars be role models for aspiring mothers. We generally just ask that they make us move. It is our hope that Britney’s new album be good enough to make us focus on her music and not on her Starbucks’ addiction, vehicular preoccupations or questionable child-rearing. If the New York Daily News is any indicator of public opinion, it just might happen.
