Africa New Vision Condemns Attack on Journalists By Senegalese Police

African New Vision, a non-governmental organization based in Washington DC Friday issued a statement condemning the recent brutal beating of two sports journalists by the Senegalese police.
Mr. Karamoko Thioune of West Africa Democracy Radio (WADR) and Mr. Babacar Kambel Dieng of private radio station Groupe Futurs Medias (RFM) were taken to hospital after being brutally beaten by Senegalese police.
The reporters were covering post-match press briefing at Dakar Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium on June 21, 2008. After being briefly detained by the police, they were taken to the hospital for medical attention.
In the statement signed by its president Mr. Bocar Moussa Ba, African New Vision and the African Diaspora expressed their support to the victims of the attack, GFM and the SYNPICS (Senegalese journalists union).
The group also denounces the “violations of human rights in Senegal and the violations of the Senegalese constitution.”
African New Vision also urges President Abdoulaye Wade and the Senegalese justice system to take action and to bring to justice those responsible for the attack on the journalists.
Africa New Vision has also sent an audio tape of the attack along with a note of protest to the United Nations Secretary General and the UN Human Rights Commission. They also intend to make available a copy of the note to the President of the African Union, they said.
