The second meeting of the Committee of Ten African Heads of States and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC) will be held on Tuesday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The CAHOSCC are Algeria, Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, Malawi, Uganda and South Africa as well as the African Union (AU).
“The Committee of Ten will consult on strategies and institutional mechanisms to promote the African Common Position on Climate Change in the run up to the Copenhagen Summit in December 2009,” the AU said.
The Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Meles Zenawi, in his capacity as CAHOSCC Coordinator convened the first meeting of the Committee of Ten African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC) in August in Addis Ababa, in collaboration with the African Union Commission.
Updating the CAHOSCC on the key positions being taken by African negotiators in the run up to the global Climate Change Conference (COP 15) in Copenhagen, Denmark ; and endorsing the key political messages on climate change to be carried forward by CAHOSCC and the AU Ambassadors to all relevant meetings that will precede the Copenhagen climate change conference are among others to be discussed at the meeting.
Africa is insisting that developed nations cut emissions by at least 40% by 2020.
The continent is also demanding richer nations to provide it with US$ 67 billion a year to help the continent tackle the impact of climate change.
The Copenhagen world climate conference is due to be held on 7-18 December .
