September 23, 2008
The deputy leader of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress party, Kgalema Motlanthe, will be appointed as the country’s president after the resignation of Thabo Mbeki, ANC party sources said on Monday.
Motlanthe, who already sits in the Cabinet, was named to take over from Mbeki until elections due around April 2009 during a meeting of the ANC’s parliamentary caucus, ANC members of parliament have said.
ANC President Jacob Zuma, without naming Motlanthe, mentioned his party deputy as a capable person able to steer the ship of state till the next polls in place of Mbeki.
