African Shippers Sue for Unity to Face Challenges of Globalisation

The 16 Central and West African member countries of the Union of African Shippers Council (UASC) have agreed to strengthen their maritime and trade exchanges so as to form a “homogeneous block” in the face of globalisation.
“The future of our economies depends on uniting our efforts, strengthening our bonds and improving our services face with the power of others such as the Americans, Europeans and more recently the Asians,” UASC president, Mohamed Bakayoko of Cote d’Ivoire said.
Among other decisions is the one that the USCA head office in Cameroon will be maintained, its status reviewed after more than 20 years while new members will be admitted.
The USCA, which is a specialized body of the Maritime organization of the West and Central Africa (MOWCA), also recommended to collaborate with South Africa and Kenya and create a supra continental body in accordance with the stipulation of the African Union (AU).
