African Union is to Send an Envoy to Assess Situation After Bissau Mutiny

Jean Ping, the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission has pledged to dispatch an envoy to Guinea Bissau to assess the situation following an attempt on President Joao Bernardo Vieira’s life by renegade soldiers.

In a telephone conversation, Ping informed Vieira that the AU was closely following developments in the West African country.

Ping reiterate the unwavering commitment of the AU to support constitutionality and definitely turn the page of coup d’états on the continent.

For his part, Vieira informed Ping of the failure of the mutiny and said Bissau has regained calm, but noted that the situation remains precarious and requires sustained attention.

Ping in a statement earlier, appealed to the country’s political and civil socieity actors to support the democratic institutions of their country and work towards strengthening them.
