African Union Mission has Urged Somalis to Support Ceasefire

November 7, 2008

The African Union peacekeeping Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) on Friday urged all Somali people in and outside the country to support the on-going efforts to implement the Djibouti peace accord in the country.

AMISOM spokesman Major Ba-Hoku Barigye told APA during an interview on Friday morning the mission is aware of preparations of attacks meant to undermine last month’s peace agreement signed by the Somali government and the Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia (ARS) in Djibouti.

“We have gathered intelligence information indicating that some people are preparing attacks including suicide bombings to break the ceasefire accord, so we are encouraging Somali people to prevent those warmongers from achieving their goals,” he stated.

He said that AMISOM is committed to continue its peace mission in Somalia and will support and encourage any one who wants to help stabilize the war-torn nation of Somalia.

“Fighting has no advantage for Somalia, we know that civilians always take the brunt of daily conflicts in the country so we urge them to side with the peace lovers and go against the warmongers,” he added.

According to Major Barigye, AMISOM will work towards implementing the ceasefire accord.

The Somali transitional federal government and the ARS have both pledged to fully implement the UN-backed peace document signed in Djibouti in late October.
