African Union Pleads for Compromise Over Solution in Zimbabwe Crisis

July 2, 2008

The African Union leaders on Tuesday vouched for an internal solution to the political crisis in Zimbabwe following hours of closed door meeting in Sharm el Sheikh, in Egypt.

In an appeal to President Robert Mugabe and the opposition leader, the African heads of state and government pleaded for a compromise in a bid to resolve the crisis sparked by the disputed presidential elections.

The AU leaders attending the 11th AU summit further urged both parties “to reach a compromise” and appealed to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries to lend support for that purpose.

Leaders of the SADC, an organization of which Zimbabwe is member, is refraining from taking positions that could increase tension.

The 11th AU summit is due to end its works on Tuesday.
