African Union Threatens Mauritania Coup Makers with Sanctions

September 24, 2008

The African Union has warned the coup makers in Mauritania that they face the risk of sanctions and isolation if they do not restore constitutional rule.

Meeting at the ministerial level in New York on Monday, the AU Peace and Security Council said the “no progress” situation in Mauritania remains a serious concern and declared “null and void” all measures taken by the military authorities after the coup d’etat of 6 August.

The AU, which has sent delegations to Mauritania, warned the authors of the coup and their civilian supporters against the risk of sanctions and isolation if they do not make rapid progress towards a return to constitutional rule and the unconditional restoration of Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi as president.

“The AU declares null and void all measures of constitutional, institutional and legislative nature taken by the military authorities and that followed the coup d’etat of 6 August, 2008,” said AU.

The AU expressed “serious concern at the fact that despite the efforts deployed to date no progress has been made towards a rapid return to constitutional legality.”
