125px-Flag_of_Ethiopia.svg_6The Commission of the African Union intends to hold a commemorative event, on a date yet to be disclosed, in honour of African peacekeepers, especially those who fell on the battle field to serve the African Union, APA learned in Addis Ababa on the sidelines of the 16th AU Executive Council ahead of the continental body’s 14th summit (31 January-2 February).

The event will inaugurate a monument in memory of the African Union peacekeeping forces, said the chairperson of the AU Commission, Jean Ping, in a report on the ’’Year of Peace and Security in Africa’’.

According to Ping, the AU Commission will also take steps to build a memorial to victims of human rights violations, including genocide at the AU headquarters.

Launched Wednesday by the AU boss, the Year of Peace and Security aims to build momentum so that concrete results are registered by the end of the year, including through the creation of a more conducive political and social environment.

“Let’s Take Action for Peace’’ will be the leading message of all activities to be conducted on celebrating the Year of Peace, a decision adopted at the last AU summit held in Sirt (Libya).
