The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Jean Ping, has lauded the resumption of diplomatic relations between Sudan and Chad.

“The AU views this development as a positive step towards normalization of relations between the two countries taken in accordance with the decision reached during the last meeting of the Ministerial Contact Group in Asmara, Eritrea, on 12 September 2008,” Ping said a statement Wednesday.

He commended the efforts exerted by the members of the Ministerial Contact Group for assisting the two countries in settling their differences peacefully.

The African Union also encourages the two sister countries to pursue further efforts to ensure that tension between them is defused and progress is achieved towards lasting peace and cooperation among them, he said.

Both countries have authorized the return of their respective Ambassadors to N’Djamena and Khartoum since 9 November 2008 after they broke relations several months ago.

For several years now, the two neighbors have gone to war and traded accusations of each other supporting rebel groups against their respected countries.
