After Nearly 22 Years Absence U.S. Peace Corps Arrive Soon in Liberia
October 19, 2008
Following nearly twenty years of absence from Liberia, American Peace Corpos Volunteers are expected to resume humanitarian work in Liberia before the end of October.
A U.S Embassy source disclosed to APA Saturday that the first batch of Peace Corps Volunteers arrives in Monrovia next week.
The Peace Corps volunteers are expected to help in the strengthening of Liberia’s education and health sectors.
The source said the first batch of Peace Corps volunteers in post-war Liberia will be accompanied by the Director of the American Peace Corps Service, Ronald Trescher.
The return of Peace Corps volunteers to Liberia is based upon a request President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf made to U.S President George Bush last year.
Peace Corps volunteers who started humanitarian work in Liberia, mainly in the educational and health fields in the 1960s, left the country due to the insecurity posed by Charles Taylor’s rebel incursion in December 1989.
