July 7, 2008
The recently signed Air Services Agreement between Sri Lanka and Pakistan will allow Sri Lanka to operate flights to Pakistan 14 times a week. Accordingly, new flight services will begin operations to Islamabad and Lahore in addition to Karachi where the national carrier flies three times a week, High Commissioner for Pakistan in Sri Lanka, Shahzad A.Chaudhry said last week.
The agreement also cargo flights to any part of Pakistan without any restriction, he added. In addition, an emerging international airline, Air Blue of Pakistan will also commence flight operations to Colombo.
“I have had discussions with the owner and chairman of the company Shahid Khaquan and he is quite positive about operating services to Sri Lanka,” the High Commissioner said.
High Commissioner Chaudhry clarifying the issue of suspending Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights to Sri Lanka since last year said that lack of aircraft has delayed the resumption of operations to Sri Lanka and added that PIA would resume its services in the near future.
“At the moment the airline is in a process of transition and re-fleeting and once the airline acquires the required number of aircraft it will resume services, he said.
There is a big demand for seats to Pakistan and Sri Lankan Airlines being the only airline operating Colombo-Karachi-Colombo it’s a huge effort to get a seat he pointed out.
The High Commissioner also noted that Pakistan is seeking the possibility of expanding bi-lateral tourism between the two nations.
