Algeria Holds Population Census

April 19, 2008

More than 60,000 census enumerators and supervisory staff are mobilized for the general population and housing census in Algeria, which will run until 30 April.

The preparations commenced two years ago so that this nationwide operation can be held in the best of conditions.

In Algiers, the 100 enumerators, 20 supervisors and 12 standby officials deployed in the district briefed the local authorities on the census operation at the auxiliary building of the Community Assembly prior to the commencement of field work.

Each enumerator shall take ten households per day, according to one of the operation’s officials deployed in this area which has over 100,000 inhabitants.

The authorities in charge of the operation ensured that the census “guarantees the respect for the citizens’ privacy” and does not aim at collecting statistical data likely to direct the development programs that must be defined in accordance with the national and local governments’ essential and real needs.

The last general population census in Algeria dates back to 1998.

From 2013, the ten-year periodicity of this operation will be reduced to five years.
