Animal Poaching is Depleting Wildlife in Zambia, Report
June 2, 2008
The Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) says it needs about US$1.5 million to re-stock its game reserves with animal species that are nearly extinct.
ZAWA Director General Lewis Saiwana told journalists on Sunday that the authority needs to re-stock animals in game reserves throughout the country.
He attributed the low animal species to rampant poaching which has gone on despite strict measures ZAWA has put in place.
As a result of the poaching, some of the animal species are now nearing extinction and the only way forward is to re-stock the game parks with those species.
Zambia recently acquired 12 rhinos from neighboring Namibia, five of which were delivered to the country last week.
He said there are other species apart from rhino’s and elephant such as various species in the antelope family which were under threat as well.
Although poaching carries jail terms, poachers have pursued their activities and often engage in daring shootouts with official game rangers.
