Another Plane Crashes in Sudan, Four Russians Die

June 30, 2008

A cargo plane burst into flames and crashed shortly after takeoff from Khartoum airport on Monday, killing all four Russian crew members on board, officials have confirmed.
A spokesman of the Civil Aviation Authority, Abdel Hafez Abdel Rahim told reporters in Khartoum Monday that the Russian plane from the Ababeel cargo company crashed, and on board were four crew members who all died in the crash. According to him, the cause of the accident is not yet known.

The Ilyushin 76 cargo plane crashed at around 7:00 am Sudanese local time after taking – off while carrying commodities to Juba, the capital of South Sudan.

The whole plane blew up in a fireball as it lifted off.

The plane has skidded across the main road on the east side of the airport, ripping off an electricity pole.

This is the third fatal air crash in Sudan in the past one month. Earlier this month, an airliner of Sudan Airlines crash-landed in Khartoum airport, killing at least 30 people. Also last Saturday, another cargo plane crashed near the Southern Sudanese town of Malakal, killing at least seven people.

Meanwhile, Sudan is celebrating the day the National Congress Party regime came to power in a coup on 30 June 1989. As a result Monday has been declared a public holiday, otherwise it is feared that the accident could have resulted in more deaths due to heavy traffic in the early morning rush hour.
