Anti-cruelty to Animal Groups Threaten to Lead Campaign Against Tourism in Mauritius

September 22, 2008

International anti-cruelty against animals groups have threatened to lead a campaign against tourism in Mauritius if the government does not take action following the horrific killing of a horse last week.

A communiqué from the Mauritius Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) issued in the Mauritian capital on Sunday said the Mustang Foundation, a leading member of the international organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), has threatened to lead the campaign against the island.

PETA, which is well-known for leading economic boycott campaigns against countries found guilty of cruelty to animals, writes that “if nothing is done by the Mauritian government, we will start an international campaign in order to ask tourists to boycott the tourist destination of Mauritius”.

The protest follows the posting of a one minute 27 second video clip on internet showing two young persons cutting the throat of Mythical Man, a horse which had taken part in horse racing in the island.

Del Ghurburrun, a member of the MSPCA, said the threat should not be taken lightly as PETA has the support of extremely influential members in the film and entertainment world such as Noami Campbell and that an action by PETA would do a lot of harm to the local tourism industry.

The Animals Rights Organization of Sweden, which also forms part of PETA, has also informed the MSPCA that it is following this matter closely and will take necessary actions if no action is taken against those who perpetrated such a horrific act.
