A.R. Rahman Launches Music Conservatory

January 8, 2008

A.R. Rahman on his 42nd Birthday announced the launch of a music conservatory. The institution named KM Music Conservatory will be India’s first Apple authorized training center and promises to offer a holistic program in music and music technology.

“I have finally opened my music conservatory,” he said. “In the coming months we will have students and singers training in performances and production.”

One of India’s leading composers, Rahman produced the music for the stage version of J R R Tolkien’s trilogy “The Lord of the Rings,” for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Bombay Dreams” and songs for more than 120 Bollywood movies.

“Having the knowledge of both music performances and music technology is invaluable,” Rahman was quoted as saying. “The skill to perform an instrument combined with production capabilities will ensure many more career opportunities.”

“Many of the instrumentalists who play today belong to my father’s generation. While younger musicians go for the keyboard or the software used, not many take to playing a violin or a brass,” he said. “The vision of KM Music Conservatory is to eliminate this obstacle and provide an exemplary orchestra here in India.”

The faculty at the conservatory will include professors from India and aboard, and other musicians who will train students in Indian and Western Classical music.
