Arab League Monitors Developments in Sudan

May 20, 2008

The Arab League is following closely developments in Sudan to secure a common Arab-African action to achieve stability in the region following the recent attack on Khartoum by Darfur rebels, which Khartoum blamed on Chad.

The Arab League is in touch with the chairman of the African Union, Jan Ping, and is stressing that the parties should abide by the principles of good neighborliness.

The Arab League special envoy to Sudan, Salah Halima said his organization is in contact with all parties in the Sudanese crisis through bilateral contacts and international mechanisms.

In a press statement on Monday, Halima said there are opportunities for dialogue between the Sudanese government and rebel movements to solve the Darfur crisis.

He said Arab countries have endorsed the efforts of the African Union and United Nations.

Halima said the Sudanese-Chadian relations need to be normalized to achieve security and stability in the region, pointing out that the agreements concluded between the two countries have not achieved the desired goal.

The latest agreement was signed in March 2008 in Dakar during the 11th summit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).
