Arab League Rejects Accusations of Neglicence in Darfur Crisis
June 9, 2008
The Arab League has rejected the statements the chairman of the Darfur Justice and Equality Movement rebel group, Khalil Ibrahim, made accusing the Arab League of negligence toward the Darfur crisis.
The Arab League envoy to Sudan, Ambassador Salah Halima, told reporters on Sunday in Cairo that the Arab League is doing its utmost efforts to reach a political settlement of the crisis in the western Sudan region of Darfur.
The Arab League met all Sudanese parties without distinction, whether government or armed movements, he added, pointing out that the League sponsored more than an agreement between the parties, the latest being the 2007 Sirte agreement.
Ambassador Salah said the lack of tangible progress in solving the Darfur crises is due to several reasons most importantly the non-completion of a complex deployment of international forces, the intervention of some regional powers, tension in relations between Sudan and Chad and the unclear vision of several armed movements that reject the signing of the peace agreement.
