Asian Stocks Plummet in Early Trading

February 6, 2008

Asian markets have taken a nosedive in early trading Wednesday following Tuesday’s plunge in U.S. and European share prices.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index has dropped more than 1,400 points - nearly six percent in morning activity. Tokyo’s Nikkei Index was off 554 points - more than four percent - and the Shanghai Composite Index was down 72 points - more than one percent.

Analysts say many investors fear the U.S. economy is close to a recession if not already in one.

U.S. and European share prices ended the day off by more than three percent Tuesday.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Bloomberg.
