November 2, 2008

At least five sailors have died and three others are still missing after a container ship sank off the coast of northeast China, news agency Xinhua reported on Sunday.

The ship carrying 146 containers and 14 people aboard sank off the port of Yingkou in Liaoning province at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Six sailors were saved by passing vessels and rescue helicopters, Xinhua said.

The ship, 91.6 meters long and with a dead weight of 2,815 tons, belonged to Fuzhou Mingfa Shipping Company. The vessel was on its way from Yingkou to Fujian province when it sank, Xinhua reported.

Two helicopters and 16 ships are still searching for the three missing sailors. Rescuers are also cleaning up an oil slick left after the wreckage, the agency said.
