AU Forces Encircle Anjouan Island for Impending Raid
March 25, 2008
Two boatloads of Comoran National Development Army (AND) soldiers and more than a hundred Tanzanian and Sudanese troops have taken positions in the vicinity of the Anjouan island since Monday morning ahead of an imminent attack to remove self-proclaimed president Mohamed Bacar.
Helicopters chartered by the Comorian army as part of the military operation against Anjouan dropped leaflets instructing the people to remain indoors, fishermen not to go out at sea and Colonel Mohamed Bacar’s soldiers to surrender.
Meanwhile, the population of Comoros is anxiously waiting for President Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi’s address on Monday at 2100 (local time).
Reports in Moroni said the army captured some of Colonel Bacar’s collaborators and that the situation is under the Comorian army’s control.
But AND sources denied the reports, while observers said the next twenty-four hours will be decisive in Anjouan.
