AU Summit Attracts 42 African Leaders
February 1, 2008
Forty-two African leaders including five prime ministers are attending the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, scheduled to end on Saturday. According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this is the largest number of African leaders ever to have gathered for the AU summit in Ethiopia.
The election of a new chairperson for the AU Commission to replace Mali’s former president Alpha Oumar Konare is said to have attracted the large number of leaders.
The presence of Kenya and Zimbabwe presidents has also attracted the attention of regional and international civil society organizations lobbying against their governments because of their domestic politics.
