AU Voices Concern Over Zimbabwe’s Delayed Election Results
April 18, 2008
The African Union Commission on Thursday said it was concerned by the delay in announcing the results of the Zimbabwe election.
“The commission wishes to express its concern over the delay observed in the announcement of the results, which creates an atmosphere of tension that is not in the least conducive to the consolidation of the democratic process,” the commission said in a statement.
The commission, however, expressed its satisfaction over the success of these elections, which it said were conducted in a “peaceful and orderly manner”.
The commission urged “the competent authorities” in Zimbabwe to announce the results without any further delay and in transparency, thus contributing to reducing the prevailing tension.
It further called on all the parties to show restraint pending the announcement of the results and invited them to accept the results in good faith once they are announced.
“The African Union reiterates its willingness to work in concert with all the parties concerned, SADC and the international community to ensure the successful completion of the ongoing electoral process in Zimbabwe for the good of the people of Zimbabwe,” the commission added.
The general elections, which the opposition claims to have won, were held in Zimbabwe on 29 March 2008.
