Customs investigators have arrested and charged a 30-year-old Saudi Arabian man for allegedly attempting to import DVDs featuring child pornography. Customs officers stopped the man at Perth International Airport after he arrived on a flight from the Philippines yesterday (8 October).
During the baggage search Customs officers allegedly found five DVDs containing images of children engaged in sexual activity and one DVD featuring images of non-consensual sex.
The man has been remanded in custody until he appears in Perth Magistrates Court this morning.
Customs investigators have charged the man with importation of child pornography in contravention of section 233BAB of the Customs Act 1901 being goods subject to Regulation 4A of the Customs (Prohibited Import) Regulations 1956.
Customs National Manager Investigations, Richard Janeczko, said Customs has detected and investigated a number of child pornography cases this year.
“Australia treats such offenses very seriously,” Mr Janeczko said.
“The importation of child pornography and abhorrent pornography is a breach of Customs regulations. Customs will seize the material, investigate and prosecute where appropriate,” Mr Janeczko said.
The maximum penalty for this offense is $275,000 and/or 10 years imprisonment.
