Australian Donates English Books to Lesotho Schools

May 10, 2008

The President of Australian Refugee Association, David Linn, has donated over 5,000 books to the Lesotho’s Transformation Resource Centre for the organization to distribute them to various schools in the country, APA has learned.

Speaking during the handing over ceremony on Friday in Maseru, Linn said the books - in English language, literature and sciences - were donated by his family, and were aimed at encouraging a culture of reading among young people, particularly students, in the mountain kingdom.

“Students should develop love for reading to improve both spoken and written English,” he said, adding that since English has become a universal language, students should be proficient and have speaking and writing skills in English.

Speaking on behalf of schools, Francis Okyere, a teacher from St. Barnabas High School, said the books are important as they will not only assist students in developing the love for reading, but also to keep them busy during their spare time.

Okyere said it was encouraging to notice that it was not only the government and teachers that are worried about the education of children, but even society from far across.

One of the students, Lerato Masheane, from Bishop de Mazenod High School, expressed her gratitude to the Linn family for the important and long lasting donation them.

She reminded her colleagues that it was their responsibility to read in order to pass their studies.
