Australian Government Sees a Large Increase in Online Tax Returns

More than one million Australians have already lodged their tax returns using e-tax, the Tax Office’s online lodgment system. The one million milestone for lodgments has been reached around 10 days earlier than last year, representing an 18% increase.

Tax Commissioner Michael D’Ascenzo said e-tax has fast become the most popular way for people to lodge their own tax returns with 1,024,769 people lodging via e-tax so far.

“In 2007 more than 1.9 million people lodged using e-tax and we expect to exceed that figure this year,” Mr D’Ascenzo said.

“The increase in the number of people using e-tax each year tells us people find it a useful and convenient way to lodge their tax returns.

e-tax is even easier to use this year with more information available to download directly into your tax return including payment summaries, government payments such as pensions and allowances, bank interest and medical expense details.

“Even though you can download a lot of your personal information directly into your return you should carefully check your return before submitting it to ensure you’ve included all income and claimed all deductions and rebates you’re entitled to,” Mr D’Ascenzo said.

As well as calculators and help screens, e-tax also offers advice on subjects like capital gains and losses, work-related expenses and provides links to other information on the Tax Office website.
