Australians Reminded There is Only One Month Left to File a Tax Return

September 30, 2008

The 31 October deadline to lodge income tax returns is fast approaching with just one month to go. Australia’s Tax Commissioner Michael D’Ascenzo has advised people who are preparing their own returns to start doing so as soon as possible and not to leave it until the last minute.

“One of the easiest ways to lodge your return is using e-tax,” Mr D’Ascenzo said.

“e-tax can save you time by downloading information from third parties directly into your return such as bank interest, payment summaries and government payments.

“Over 1.6 million people have already lodged using e-tax, and around 71% of these people have downloaded information to help them successfully complete their returns.”

It’s important to carefully check your return before submitting it, including any information you’ve downloaded into your return, to ensure you’ve included all income and claimed all deductions and rebates you’re entitled to.

e-tax is available to download from the Tax Office website www.ato.gov.au

You can also lodge using TaxPack or a registered tax agent.

TaxPack 2008 is available from newsagents or Tax Office shopfronts or by phoning 1300 720 092.

People eligible to use the short tax return will have received a copy in the mail and can lodge over the phone by calling 13 28 65.

Mr D’Ascenzo has also reminded people using a tax agent for the first time or a different one from last year to contact them by 31 October.

“Tax agents have longer deadlines to lodge their clients’ tax returns but you need to contact them by 31 October.

“Only registered tax agents can charge a fee to prepare and lodge a tax return.”
