Bad Drinking Water Causes Typhoid Outbreak in Turkmenistan

July 15, 2008

A quarantine caused by a typhoid outbreak has been ordered in the northern Lebap region of Turkmenistan. The disease simultaneously hit several settlements in May and June, the Turkmenistan Chronicle reports.

The number of people affected are unknown since officials have provided little information, according to the websites of a number of human rights organizations. However, it has been confirmed that several dozen residents in the regional center of Turkmenabat have contracted the disease.

According to local experts, most of the cases of typhoid have been linked to untreated drinking water which is believed to have become contaminated due to cracks in pipes formed during this year’s unusually cold winter. Also, in some areas, sewage and water pipelines have not been repaired after being damaged in winter.

A special group has been formed in the Lebap region to fight the disease. Measures included a ban on travel from northern areas of the region, the Turkmenistan Chronicle reports.
